Coring and Greens maintenance

The reasons behind why and when we core and aerate our greens.

Our greens will be small cored in April and jumbo cored in September each year. Also all greens will be Verti-drained every 5-6 weeks throughout the Summer season. This is done to enhance and maintain the greens long term health and playability. If we allow the Thatch to thicken to much it will have an adverse affect on the greens ability to drain water, digest nutrients, maintain firmness and prevent disease. The best time of year to core is dictated by the grasses ability to recover and consequently provide a consistent putting surface i.e. when it is actively growing, not dying off or dormant. The links below give a very good overview of what Thatch is, why we do it and why we do it when we do it. While these links are from the USGA and N. America they equally apply to our location and weather conditions!

Why do we core our greens?

This image shows how important it is to core the greens.  It helps to reduce the Thatch and encourages strong root growth,
